PSL - Helen Magnus | Ashley Magnus --> Imagine if this all came down

[ continued from here! ]

[ ashley looked up at the monitor screen, letting her eyes focus on what her mother was pointing out. she wasn't a scientist at all, but she'd spent enough time around her mother and the sanctuary work to understand what was going on. ]

So it might be a clue to unraveling this strain? [ she glanced hopefully to her mother. anything that could help would be more than welcome. ]

It could be. The key would be to know how they altered it, which is the harder part. For now I'm focussing on finding a cure to it, I can research it in more detail later.

[ Unless she had to do that first, which would take time that she may not have had ]

[ ashley nodded, sighing softly. this whole thing was so complicated and she hadn't heard anything that might help them crack it while she was out. ]

Anything I can do?

Find Will. He's been keeping in contact with the other Sanctuaries, passing along anything that we or they have found. He's overdue updating. [ Which meant that it was unlikely that he had something new but it gave them all something to do ]

Okay.

[ and ashley headed off as quickly as she could. she hated being idle and was glad for the opportunity to do something. when she found him, will was surprised to find her, but happy all the same. he didn't have anything new to tell her, but she explained about what she'd brought back and he promised to go talk to helen later. ashley decided to check on everyone else before she returned to her mother's side, but about half an hour later, she was back, more out of worry for what was going on inside the sanctuary than any desire to see the scientific side of things. ]

Will doesn't have anything new to report. He just wanted me to tell you he'd be back soon to see what I brought.

As I expected.

[ Helen had gotten down to full examining the sample, face to a microscope as she replied to Ashley. Being able to examine it was helping her a little, letting her rule out things and bring back ideas that she'd previously ruled out. She didn't have anything concrete but she had somewhere to start from ]

Whatever they did to alter it has made it resistant to many antivirals, but it's too soon to say anything definite.

[ if she hadn't already promised her mother she wouldn't run off again, ashley would be sorely tempted to head out to see if she could find something else to help. as it was, she just nodded, hesitating. ]

I'm just... going to camp out in here with you. Is that okay?

[ she could find a way to busy herself somehow, but leaving her mother alone while all this crap was going on didn't sit well with her. ]

I have no complaints.

[ Helen gave her a smile ]

You may even be able to help me.

[ Maybe not on a scientific level but conversation, distractions... clearing her mind could help to refocus her mind ]

Tell me how.

[ she camped out in a chair nearby and curled up, ready and willing to do anything. ]

I should think that you would know that.

[ Helen gave her a smile, one that only a other could give to a daughter ]

[ yeah, she knows. maybe now's a good time. ]

All right. I'm here, you're here. Go for the lecture and get it over with. [ she sounds... more amused than worried about it. distractions. they can do distractions, even if they're just teasing. ]

That wasn't what I meant. [ Normally she may, but she's got something more pressing at hand ]

Take the rare opportunity, Ashley.

[ it would come later, she knew. ]

We could talk about what we're going to do after this. [ because ashley had ever confidence that her mother would figure out an antidote to all of this, a way to fix it. ] I'm calling a good dinner night.

[ Maybe ]

When would you like it? [ And her next question would be what ]

How about tomorrow? Or Friday. That'll give us time to relax after all this.

You say that as if I'll have an answer by then. [ Helen could hope but she hadn't made much progress so far ]

[ uh, duh. ]

You're my mom, you're Helen Magnus. [ said like this was the most obvious thing in the world. ] You'll figure it out.

[ even as young as she was, ashley knew well of her mother's fame and prominence in the world, particularly where abnormals were concerned. if helen couldn't figure it out, no one could. ]

[ Oh, Helen had to laugh a little at that ] Thank you, Ashley. [ Even if she was really thinking that her daughter had a little too much time ] And dinner will be lovely.

[ good. the laugh makes ashley smile a touch. and hey, she had two free hands to use for anything. ]

Good. Because I'm not taking no for an answer this time.

[ if what she'd brought didn't help, she'd be sorely tempted to go back and try again, promise or not. ]

Is that right? [ Helen liked that determination, and it would be nice to spend time with her ] What were you thinking of?

[ she shrugs. ]

I'd kinda hoped you'd be able to suggest something, too. I'm not taking over everything here.

[ teasingly. because they need the distraction from the virus. ]

Not everything, but I'm curious as to what your 'good dinner night' would be. [ And she's going to just be looking back at her microscope, and continue the conversation ]

I'm taking suggestions. I just want to get out. Being cooped up in here with this virus thing going on isn't my idea of fun.

[ she's surprised it took helen this long to go back to her work. ]

It's hardly mine either. [ But she does look up for a moment, thinking ] It's been a while since we've [ Especially Helen ] had Mexican.

That sounds good. Definitely different from what we normally have. The question then becomes, do we make it a full-staff party, too, or just family?

[ testing to see how helen will answer this. one could argue that the full staff is their family. ]

[ Which they are, thank you, but considering that this was Ashley's idea (and Helen's thinking of other things than a future dinner) she's letting Ashley run with it ]

That choice I will leave to you.

[ ashley just flashed her mother a grin. ]

Whole family, then.

[ meaning the sanctuary staff. even the big guy. maybe especially him since she'd known him her whole life. ]

It'll be lovely. You should make certain that everyone is happy with the choice, however.

[ And if not they could do Mexican another night, just the two of them ]

Once all this is over with, I will.

[ maybe a double dinner in that case. one for everyone and one for just them. ashley will think on this. ]

I won't force anyone who doesn't want to, don't worry.

I hadn't expected that you would. [ It was the reason as to why she was letting Ashley have free reign of it - she trusted her implicitly with it ]

You know me well.

[ part of her wanted to ask how things were going, but she knew it would take a while, so she fell silent. she was getting a little restless, but when wasn't she? ]

[ Helen gave a smile at that - she should hope so ]

You don't need to stay here.

[ And this was one of those moments where she did know her well. As long as Ashley stayed in the Sanctuary Helen didn't mind where she was ]

You'll call me if you find something out? [ or need anything, but that went unsaid. ]

Of course. [ She promised

Great.

[ she smiled. ]

Good luck.

[ and then off ashley went to see if she couldn't be more productive somewhere else. ]
