PSL - James Watson | Helen Magnus ---> We're glad for what we've got

It had been a long day for Helen, a very long day indeed, and she was exhausted after everything that had happened, the emotional toll of finally ending the Ripper case and dealing with Adam. She'd taken her time the next day, spent a lot of it downstairs or in the library, trying to keep herself occupied. But eventually, it became too much and she sought out the only other person she could: James.

Wherever he was, she needed to talk to him. Much as she wanted to deal with it herself, she knew she couldn't. He'd been helping her deal with John first and then the Ripper case, and so she knew, despite everything else, that she could rely on him.

Her footsteps were quiet, her skirts barely rustling as she approached his study first. If he wasn't there, she would check the library next. And if he wasn't there, she'd bury herself in the books. She could use the distraction.

"You are making it difficult to think of sleep, darling," she murmured, pulling back to look him over once again. He really was. The hand at her back, what he'd been doing to her hair. If she were really worried about how he would be treating her, she would have been terrified at these touches. But they were nice, comforting and stimulating all at the same time.

She brushed her thumb gently across his cheek for a moment before she curled back up against him. He could probably sense how her heart was racing with anticipation, though she was attempting to push it all aside and focus on sleeping. It had been a long few days and she needed the rest, much as she didn't particularly want it. Even so, she couldn't help pressing against him, holding him close as she nuzzled her nose and head against his chest.

"I wish I could say I am sorry darling," he murmured, rubbing the small of her back with his hand, "but I truly am not." And he wasn't either, instead he was rather enjoying the small things he was doing to her. However stimulating they were to her he was drawing some amount of comfort from it all, and he couldn't help but feel tired, comfortable with her like that.

He just smiled at her touch and pulled her closer to him, once again resting his chin on her head as she buried hers into his chest. This was all he wanted really, and as comfortable as he was he could feel his own exhaustion catching up to him and he closed his eyes. Not falling asleep just getting comfortable.

"Of course not," she murmured in return, nuzzling against his chest for a moment longer. She was comfortable like that, but she knew she wouldn't be able to fall asleep like that. So, a little while later, she carefully rolled over to press her back to him, tugging his arm around her again and tucking herself up under his chin once more. She loved this closeness and whatever was going on between them, she knew they both needed to sleep tonight. So much had happened recently that they were both exhausted. As much as she wanted to stay awake to see what else would occur, they had lifetimes for that.

Sleep first. Then figure things out. Unless James had a better idea, which she would be open to considering at this point.

Helen smiled as she curled up, running her thumb across his hand as she let her eyes slide shut.

He was going to be spoiled with her constantly doing that. Either nuzzling his chest or just being curled up against him, he was going to find it difficult to sleep alone, he could already tell. Though he pushed that to the side for the moment, because however much he loved it he would focus on her first, which meant loosening his hold on her to let her shift before he got comfortable again.

Sleep first yes that was what was needed, and with her tucked up against him like that it wasn't hard to follow her on. "Sleep well, darling." He murmured, linking his fingers with hers as he fell asleep.

At some point in the night, she rolled over, curling back up against him with her face towards him. All she was really aware of as she drifted off to sleep was how nice it felt to be held in someone's arms like that, to not have to worry about whether or not she was going to live through the night or what she would have to deal with come morning. He was there for her, as much a part of her safety net as she herself was.

And it was quite nice to wake up with one of her arms around his side, though she didn't open her eyes right away, preferring to simply hold him for the time being.

James didn't mind her rolling over at all, shifting his head instead to rest it just ever so slightly on top of hers after words. Having someone in his bed like that was a rare treat, and he was not about to squander it by over thinking things. For now he would just be there with her, and that was all that was needed.

Even when morning came, he stayed like that, a much deeper sleeper than one would think he would be honestly.

Well, she certainly didn't wish to wake him up if he was still asleep, so she just tightened her hold on his side slightly and nestled further against his chest. This... was so very nice. The last time she'd had this with anyone was before John lost his mind. Thinking of that, however, brought back too many painful memories, so she tried to bury them and simply enjoy the man in bed with her.

This was a man she loved, one she was certain would not harm her like the last.

She probably should wake him soon though, seeing as how it was her room and the possible issues that could be had. James however was rather oblivious to that, rather focused on the comfort of it all and his sleep to much care, very much sleeping like the dead if he was at all honest. But at least he was asleep embraced by the woman he loved, which was more than enough for him, at least for the moment.

She was well aware of those issues, but the possibility of those coming into play didn't make her any more willing to interrupt his sleep. Still, she knew she ought to and so she reached a hand up to tease his hair back from his face, tilting her head back to look at him.

"James...? I do believe it's morning."

He shifts slightly at her moving the hair out of his face, shifting his cheek as well when he feels her tilt her face up. He hates waking up in the morning really and it's all her fault for the extra difficulty he's experiencing right now.

"Is it? That's nice darling." It's a sleepy mumble really.

Mornings are actually part of her favorite things in the day, though she can understand why he wouldn't be happy with it. Still, she smiles and gently kisses his nose.

"Perhaps we ought not to spend all day lying around in bed."

Perhaps. Or perhaps they could enjoy their time together. For now. She would come up with an alibi somehow.

With the odd hours he keeps he has his reasons for not liking mornings. Especially when he's warm and comfortable and not at all really willing to move because of that.

"It depends, is your father home?"

If Gregory were home it would be entirely different really. For now he just wanted to stay with her and he couldn't help the smile at her kiss to his nose.

"If he is, I have yet to hear about it," she answered honestly, letting her hand run through his hair absently. "And I would have thought he would make a grand entrance of it, if he had."

He usually did, after all. She couldn't say she blamed James for wanting to stay in bed with her. Goodness knew she would prefer to remain where they were as well.

"I would have as well," he started, the rest of that sentence lost in his humming of contentment at her hand in his hair. They both enjoyed that but for rather different reasons really, or so he thought. "Which is a good thing I suppose for us."

It meant they could stay in bed for a while longer hopefully. "And hopefully none of the servants talk."

Helen smiled in response. Apparently he liked her hand in his hair as much as she liked his hand in her hair. That was good to know.

"I doubt they will. Even if they do, it certainly would not be the worst thing anyone has said about me."

His cheek got hissed this time. She was rather enjoying having someone in her bed.

James smile more at that, snuggling more against her as she kissed his cheek (and he was thankful she didn't mind his beard) and kept his eyes firmly shut.

"Yes but still darling. There are some things I would think you'd not want spread around the house, lest your father hear tale of us doing untoward things."

But it doesn't prompt him to move.

"If you're not careful, I may start thinking you are the one who wishes to leave the comfort of my bed," she chastised him softly, though her tone belied her worry. On which subject it had been placed was difficult to tell, whether her father finding out of their exploits or her losing James to the morning.

"If he suspects something, he will ask me."

But her hand stopped moving through his hair, resting against his side once more as she sighed gently. He did have a point, much as she wanted not to admit it.

"I hardly want to leave Helen," he mumbled as he buried his face against her more. He didn't want to at all, and he hated he had her worried that he would do such a thing really.

"I keep forgetting that at times, you father is more understanding then my own parents."

And he can't help how he sighs some as he almost pouts with her hand out of his hair. He had been enjoying that.

His head was now against her neck and the feel of his breath against her skin certainly wasn't helping her keep a cool head. Her hand tightened slightly at this new development. Gregory had been aware of the embryo - it was part of the reason the entire betrayal had hurt as much as it had - so honestly this was nothing compared to her past. Her father could handle this, especially with a man he do so approve of. She wasn't worried.

"He has known quite a bit more than your parents, at least," she answered, trying desperately to keep her head. "I daresay he would not mind entirely."

He wasn't actually aware of what effect he was having on her at the moment. To be honest it was just comfortable for him to lay like that and he wasn't about to move unless prompted. As for Gregory? That was all very true, and it did put him at ease for the moment. Not so at ease though that he wasn't aware of what would happen if Gregory didn't approve of this match but that was for another time.

"That is true," he started and then turned his face to kiss her neck, to lazy to lean up and kiss her properly, "now if only my brother can not force things we will be well off."

A shiver of anticipation shot down her body at the kiss to her neck and she let her eyes slide shut, one hand reaching up to rest against the back of his head. Oh, he was making it difficult to think clearly.

"You believe he might try to... force us?"

He felt that and he can't help the smile on his face as he kisses her neck again, this time deliberately and not out of laziness. She really should just tell him things...

"Only in the matter that he would want me happy, he's unfortunately over protective for being the younger sibling who works in government."

It was difficult to tell him things when he was the one banishing all coherent thought. A very soft sound escaped her lips, caught between desire and some sort of happiness.

"I daresay, if I cannot make you happy... then I am doing something wrong."

Her hand tightened in his hair as her other held him close to her. He was well on his way to making Helen Magnus speechless and that did not happen very often.

Well that was her problem now wasn't it? And that sound got a chuckle out of him, which he was quick to make sure could be felt against her neck.

"Indeed you would be darling, but I have little fear in that."

And he wasn't going to move thank you very much Helen. He rather enjoyed being close to her like that and getting those reactions, it was in part an experiment and in part to try and show her affection.

The same sound escaped her lips again, slightly louder this time. Fortunately or unfortunately, it meant that she completely bypassed whatever he was saying to her in favor of allowing her own thoughts to meet the air between them.

"Dear God, James."

Her tone isn't chastising, not even scolding. It's filled with wonder and awe, amazement that someone can make her feel like this again.
